چکیده

• Quantity of annual carbon sequestration by terrestrial ecosystems can be measured at a reasonable accuracy; • Median measure of current NEP or sequestration by forested ecosystems is 3 metric tons per hectare per year; • Current calculated global TBCS for forests is ~3Gt C per yr; • Estimated future TBCS capacity is 200-250 Gt C using available knowledge and current technology and management practice at nominal estimated cost of $10-20 per metric ton of C; • It seems reasonable to assume that advanced science, technology, and management can double the capacity at low additional costs. • TBCS option offers potential for sequestering more than 50 percent of projected excess CO2 that will have to be managed over the next century.

Carbon sequestration potential in soil and stand of Nitraria schoberi L.

Arid and semi-arid lands cover around one-third of the world's terrestrial expanse and their widespread plantdistributions provide these areas with a high potential for sequestering carbon. Vegetation management for developingshrub or tree species in arid and semi-arid regions is one inexpensive and multi-purpose approach for decreasing CO2.This study assessed the potential of carbon sequestrat...

IEEE JOURNAL OF SELECTED TOPICS IN APPLIED EARTH OBSERVATION AND REMOTE SENSING manuscript ID

Large uncertainties in terrestrial carbon stocks and sequestration predictions result from insufficient regional data characterizing forest structure. This study uses satellite waveform lidar from ICESat to estimate regional forest structure in central New England, where each lidar waveform estimates fine-scale forest heterogeneity. ICESat is a global sampling satellite, but does not provide wa...

How planting density and grazing intensity affect the above- and below-ground carbon pools in a dryland ecosystem?

Climate change is known as one of the most important environmental challenges. Sequestration of carbon in terrestrial ecosystems is a low-cost option that may be available in the near-term to mitigate increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations, while providing additional benefits. In this study, we estimated the effects of planting density and grazing intensity on the potential of Atriplex canes...

Predicting and evaluating the effectiveness ofocean carbon sequestration by direct injection

Direct injection of CO2 into the ocean is a potentially effective carbon sequestration strategy. Therefore, we want to understand the effectiveness of oceanic injection and develop the appropriate analytic framework to allow us to compare the effectiveness of this strategy with other carbon management options. Here, after a brief review of direct oceanic injection, we estimate the effectiveness...

Potential of Carbon Sequestration of Hammada salicornica Vegetation Type in Desert Areas (Case Study: South Khorasan, Iran)

Climate change due to increasing the level of greenhouse gases including CO2 is the main environmental issue of the world in the new century. One of the effective way for reducing atmospheric CO2 is carbon sequestration by plants and soils. A vast area of Iran has desert condition with special adapted plant species in which can be devoted for carbon sequestration. Hammada salicornica as a shrub...
